Letter to a friend...

I had a friend (he's still a friend but has now moved from England) who, after a few pints, would always ask me - "What is life?; What does happiness mean?"

I wrote him an eMail today - here's an adapted extract of the same...

Matey,

Thought of you yesterday...as I think I have an answer to your [eternal] question - "what is life?" - I hit upon the answer by chance so here it is:

"Happiness is lying in grass [I was in Greenwich] on a sunny day with iPod playing Led Zeppelin in your ears".

Those 20 minutes I got on my own were peace and tranquility that one does not get when one tries hard to meditate in solitude. And I got it amidst a crowd of 5000 souls.

Life is nothing but a series of happy moments - spent with yourself [and your loved ones].
Everything else is a distraction towards capitalism. Those billboards will keep telling you to buy a bigger car always - they are meant to - isn't it?...

Lying in the grass, in the sun, listening to Plant's vocals & Page's guitar riffs & Bonham's drums... on iPod ..... Happiness ...Sure ... Momentary happiness - linked to a delight of your senses ...Skin sensation of the grass, the warmth of the sun, clean air of a spring day, interesting lyrics to occupy your mind & music beats to synchronise the senses ...a pleasing of your mind ....OR ..a long term sustained Happiness that lasts even thru the dreary long work-days/weeks ahead ?

Recommend a Documentary DVD released last year called - The serious business of HAPPINESS (by Larry Kurnarsky)... or a read of the book - The Power of Now - by Eckhart Tolle ...

The power of staying in the present ...not looking behind, not looking ahead ....just enjoying this very moment ...that indeed gives Happiness. But for a sustained state of happiness, one needs to control the mind from wandering ...& staying focused on the present. This requires practice thru tools like meditation & positivisim. In Eastern thought (both Buddhism & Hinduism) though, sustained Happiness is described as directly linked to the nature of the goals one sets for himself/herself. No material goals can provide sustained happiness but focusing on larger goals such as trying to alleviate the world's poverty, trying to reach a new planet etc., can bring about long term happiness ....

Eventually the journey to happiness - as the DVD concludes - is a one-on-one journey ...a self-discovery. Its about discovering your true self - not just what turns you on ...but what keeps you turned on ..... No, its not Led Zep, nor viagra ...

...Another Friend ...

Oh dear..oh dear - Led Zep and that afternoon was an example...the idea is to fill your life with series of happy moments doing what makes you tick...

Nobody finds sustained happiness, and surely not by watching a DVD on happiness. lol:-)

Your friend...
